Sex Offender News Conference and Community Hearing

July 30, 2007

We’re not going to weigh in on whether this is politically motivated or not (what isn’t), however, it is worth mentioning that there will be a news conference today at 1pm at Celebration Park and a public meeting tonight at City Hall to discuss a push for a special legislative session to address our state’s glaring sex offender registration problems.

Whatever the motivation, we’re happy that this issue will remain in the forefront and hopeful that progress can be made to better protect our children.  It has been recently reported that there are a number of issues with our current registration system.

Citizens can search for registered sex offenders themselves at the Washington State Sex Offender Information Center.

Congrats!

The Federal Way Graffiti Blog made the New York Times for their use of Google’s mapping tools in their blog.   It’s too bad we need a graffiti blog here, but it’s great to see local bloggers make big news.   Congratulations!

Soul Update

July 23, 2007

We stumbled across the author’s blog.  Looks like he’s expecting a lynching.

Also, HyleBlog weighs in on the article and catches a nice slip that got by the proofreaders (sort of shows you that maybe the original author didn’t even bother venturing out here to do his story).   Just as well.

While you’re checking out the HyleBlog, swing on over to Friends of the Hylebos.  The West Hylebos park is a spot we pass by all the time, and had no idea it was there.  We’ll be sure to check it out soon, as it looks like a great place for a peaceful walk.

Free Concert Wednesday

July 23, 2007

The Summer Sounds at the Beach free outdoor concert series continues this week at Steel Lake Park.  Lewis Lane, classical guitar (OK, so it’s not soul) will perform at 7:00pm, Wednesday, July 25.

The free concert series continues every Wednesday through August 22nd.

Federal Way’s “Soul”

July 23, 2007

Former Federal Way resident (twenty years removed), John Moe, writes in the Times about Federal Way’s lack of soul.  I would tend to agree with many of his observations, but that is only because I really haven’t looked much deeper than he apparently did.

In his quest to find this soul, he visits the Commons, Federal Way High School,  and a strip mall on Pac Hwy.  Obviously, Mr. Moe isn’t big on research.   If by soul, he means a true city center, well, we’ll hopefully have a real one soon.

99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

July 22, 2007

If you haven’t checked them out yet, 99 Bottles is a great new addition to Federal Way.  Every time we visit, Craig and Tiffany have some great new libation to offer.    Swing by their shop at the new Crossings development for their Wednesday sampling.  This week’s offering is Allagash Grand Cru.  Described as “a deep-golden colored ale with a full, yet refined malty palate and a gentle fruit and spice aroma.”

99 Bottles offers regular tasting events, often hosted by the brewers or distributors of the fine products they sell.

We’ve Got Churches

July 20, 2007

Wondering who is going to be occupying all of that new office space east of I-5 on 320th?  One of the new tenants is the Washington Conference of Seventh Day Adventists.  This is not a church (they have two in Federal Way), it is their regional headquarters and training center.

You can find links to some of our many churches here in Federal Way on our links page.

Will They Take Transit?

July 20, 2007

If it does indeed get built, the proximity to the new Transit Center will surely be a selling point for some of the new residents to the 890-unit Symphony development.  I am certain that the first worry on everyone’s mind is the impact this and future developments will have on our already-crowded roads.

Meanwhile, Sound Transit is proposing extension of the yet unfinished light rail line to Federal Way (and beyond).  We’ll be voting on that proposal in November.  With all of the growth projections for the region and current land use regulations, it is clear that we’ll be looking at higher density residential development and a greater reliance on transit.

Federal Way Graffiti

July 19, 2007

Graffiti in Federal Way is bad!  It’s everywhere and while some people call graffiti street art, the type we have here is not even remotely artistic – it’s just flat out vandalism.

Since April, the Federal Way Graffiti Blog has been tracking graffiti around the city.  Here are their three steps to reporting graffiti to them:
