Where was your kid last night?

August 29, 2007

We can only assume that some kids are responsible for last night’s rock throwing incident on I-5 at 272nd.   Thankfully, nobody was seriously injured, as the outcome of this display of stupidity could have been very bad indeed.

If you know anything about it, the Washington State Patrol wants to hear from you – 425.649.4370.

Unincorporated King County Shrinks

August 23, 2007

The recent ballot measure to incorporate the “East Federal Way” portion of unincorporated King County got trounced Tuesday.   Meanwhile, the unincorporated area east of Federal Way grew smaller as residents of the West Hill of Auburn overwhelmingly voted to annex to Auburn.

The sad fact is only 26% of registered voters even bothered to cast a ballot.  Here’s hoping those that did not vote are happy with such a minority of people making decisions on their behalf.  We have a real problem with anything other than contests with more than two options that must be narrowed down for the general election being voted on in primaries and so-called “special” elections, but that’s the way it is unfortunately.

We wonder what this will mean for services for the folks left in this little band of unincorporated King County.  We hope that this does not mean more county resources going to fewer people with the cost being borne on the backs of those who have now accepted the reality that unincorporated urban areas are a relic that will continue to fade.  Unfortunately, that will probably be the case.

It seems the fear-mongers in the potential annexation area have won this round.  It’s too bad.  As they claim that growth would increase under the city, there’s apparently no stopping growth under the county (see the two proposed subdivisions on 321st St).   In any event, this issue will not go away.  The area cannot support itself and the county doesn’t want it.   They’ve saved themselves pennies a year on property taxes and increased the burden on all county residents to provide them services that should clearly be provided by the cities.

Now, please, GO CLEAN UP YOUR SIGNS!

Federal Way Farmers Market

August 20, 2007

In our very first post, we were a bit hard on the Federal Way Farmers Market.   Mostly, we lamented the fact that it was held in the mall parking lot.  But, hey, this is Federal Way, and the mall is right smack in the middle, so I guess it fits.  Or maybe it was the weather on those early days.  Whatever the case was, we’re Farmers Market converts now!

Over the last few weeks, we’ve started a trend of going to the Farmers Market to pick up some fresh organic produce for the week, large and inexpensive fresh-cut bouquets of flowers, and a half gallon of Rockridge Orchards‘ fantastic apple cider.  There is a great sense of community spirit both from the vendors and the shoppers that we don’t normally associate with typical Federal Way suburbia.  So, we can honestly say that we’ll miss the Farmers Market when the season ends in October.

Go check them out!

Annexation Fear

August 20, 2007

We’ve witnessed an increase in the “No Annexation” sign-wavers the last week or so at 320th and Military Road.  We’ve checked out a website for the opposition and we’re not swayed by their arguments or sign-waving.  To us, it just looks like desperate folks trying to fight a lost cause.

Sushi Wars

August 15, 2007

We’ve found only two places to eat sushi in FedWay – Akasaka and Hanabi.   We don’t care for Akasaka’s sushi (their other food is fine).  Hanabi’s sushi is serviceable and consistent, but it is not creative, and it too leaves us yearning for Mashiko, Toyda, and Shiro’s - all from our “city” days.

The Federal Way sushi “scene” is about to heat up – and we’re ecstatic!

Condo Conversion Craze Hits Federal Way

August 13, 2007

Before any ground is broken at the new Symphony development, Federal Way is in for more condos according to the Seattle Times.  It’s been going on for years in Seattle – and even here in Federal Way (758 units so far) and the experts say that we’ll see even more of it in the future.

The 111-unit Whispering Hills Apartments will be giving residents the boot on August 31st to convert the complex to condominiums (although, their website mentions nothing of this).   While some people are clearly opposed to apartments at all costs (this is a common theme of the anti-Symphony people), the fact is that there is a diverse spectrum of income earners that have different housing needs and apartments serve these people.

On the other hand, the cost of these condos will allow others to actually be able to afford to buy their own place – $208,000 for a three-bedroom unit.  We’re also hopeful that this change might just clean up the area around 21st and 356th a bit.

We’re conflicted on this one.

Commute From Hell, Day One

August 13, 2007

King 5 news reports that today’s commute was pretty darn good.   We’re betting tomorrow will be horrible as everyone who did something different today decides to go back to the normal routine.  We’re lucky enough to telecommute, so we won’t be experiencing this potential nightmare firsthand.  Thankfully.

We haven’t found any reports on the buses from Federal Way, but we did see that the Sounder trains were jammed (including at least one passenger from Federal Way who tried it out vs. her normal bus ride).  Here’s hoping more people will ride the train even after the construction is over.  We think the Sounder is probably the best money that Sound Transit has ever spent.
