Wi-Fi on your way to Work

September 29, 2007

Sound Transit has added wi-fi access to many of its Express Bus fleet including Federal Way’s route 577.   It looks like a crap shoot if your particular bus will have it on a particular day, but odds are that you’ll be able to read Federal Way Blog as your bus winds through traffic.

Look for the Wi-Fi Onboard logo near the doors to know if you’re on a connected bus.

Wastemobile This Weekend

September 29, 2007

We’re a little late with this one – we remembered it just now.

The King County Hazardous Wastemobile will be at the Commons today and tomorrow from 10am-5pm.  You can drop off items such as paint, batteries, and fluorescent light tubes – among many others for free.

When you’re done with your drop off, don’t forget to swing by the Farmers Market which continues to run Saturdays through the end of October.

Steel Lake Shooting Arrest

September 27, 2007

The suspect in the August Steel Lake Shootings has been picked up by police and is now in jail at the Kent Justice Center.   Turns out he is 17-years old, as opposed to the 22 that was originally reported.

He’s charged with posession of a stolen gun and a drive by shooting.

He’ll be charged as an adult.   Good.

Pac Hwy Carpool Lanes

September 24, 2007

An unnamed reader writes to the Seattle Times Bumper to Bumper column to complain about the difficulty of moving from the general-purpose lanes into the right (HOV) lane on Pac Hwy to turn into businesses.

Her answer to this problem is to suggest that their be a slower speed limit in the HOV lanes.  We’ve never had this problem before, and in fact, we do drive the speed limit in the HOV lane – and sometimes, that is actually faster than the flow of traffic on Pac Hwy.   Isn’t that the point of the HOV lanes?   If we had to drive the same speed of traffic in the general purpose lanes, would not that completely negate the benefit of the HOV lanes?

The column reports that “in the city of Federal Way, lone drivers can be ticketed for using the car-pool lane to go through an intersection with a signal.”    So, there is no need to cut across the HOV lanes at the point of the business you want to visit – you can ride in them for the whole block prior to your destination, assuming you don’t cross a signaled intersection.

No, the trains won’t be running yet, but the Downtown Bus Tunnel will re-open on Monday, September 24.    Federal Way’s routes 174 and 194 will be moving back in.

New Website for Friends of the Hylebos

September 19, 2007

The Friends of the Hylebos have been busy creating a new website that is chock full of information about the West Hylebos Wetlands and Hylebos Creek.   Head on over and check it out!

We can’t wait until the Boardwalk Replacement Project is complete so we can go explore.

One for the “Dumb Criminals of FW” File

September 18, 2007

The Seattle-PI has a story today about one of Federal Way’s more intelligent criminals.  Read it here:  Man reports missing cocaine, gets arrested for drug smuggling.  I guess it was a calculated risk on his part – I am sure jail is much better than facing his bosses.

It’s a shame that ICE let the report go uninvestigated until some Boy Scouts found the missing stash – but that’s for another blog.

Sushi Wars: Blue Island Sushi & Roll

September 7, 2007

We visited the newly-opened Blue Island Sushi & Roll tonight for the first time and while it is by no means a world-class sushi joint, we were fairly happy with it.  If you’ve never been to a conveyor-style sushi restaurant, you have to try it.  From the moment you sit down, you have an onslaught of sushi coming at you.

Each dish is on a color coded plate – Yellow: $1.50, Sky Blue: $2.00, Orange: $2.50, Purple: $3.00, and Blue: $3.50.  At the end of your meal, the staff counts up your used plates to calculate your bill (see our stack in the attached picture).
